Rodney Billington is a highly regarded artist, whose work has been exhibited in prominent galleries in England and America. His paintings have been praised by leading art critics in both the New York Times and The Times in the UK.
Rodney recently relocated to Battersea in London. His current work focuses on cityscapes and the often hidden views of this cosmopolitan city. Among his recent works are paintings depicting views from the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, which offer an unusual aerial perspective of London.
‘Fleet St’ is one such work in which the gentle curve of this famous London concourse resembles a canyon gouged through the grey and ochre rooftops of Farringdon. This rare view delineates London old against London new, juxtaposing light against dark with refreshing subtlety.
Another vibrant composition, ‘View From Peter Jones’, offers a viewpoint from the London department store out through the forest of Victorian chimney pots and carved stone windows of Knightsbridge: a scene passed by thousands every day but one that I imagine is rarely seen with such clarity and vision as in this painting.
For me this new vision of London gains most resonance in Rodney’s views of Battersea Power Station which I pass every day on the way to my office. Until meeting Rodney at a recent art fair, I had almost forgotten the building was there. It was just a dark rusting hulk awaiting the inevitable approach of the luxury flat. I must confess, I’ve actually travelled to work earlier just to catch the sun hitting those red brick walls, as depicted in several of Rodney’s invigorating portrayals of this iconic building.
Rodney’s work is spectacular not only in its composition and technique but more importantly in its fresh new approach to the way we view our capital. It’s changed not only my living room but also my journey to work and my own perspective of my now favourite city.”
